How to change a SMTP server’s details / settings in Mozilla Thunderbird 3

This blog post is about how to change a SMTP server’s details/settings in Thunderbird.

It isn’t unusual for people to transfer services for their domain to another provider. This often results in new settings being required as not all servers are configured in exactly the same way. For instance moving email servers can result in you needing to update your email server settings in your email client application.

This support post covers how to specifically update an existing SMTP server’s settings in Mozilla Thunderbird 3. A good example would be when a SMTP server was pop3.thedomain.org , but now is mail.thedomain.org Often the port number and other setting will stay the same.

Step 1 – Open Mozilla Thunderbird 3.

Step 2 – For Linux users from the ‘Edit’ menu please select ‘Account Settings’. For Microsoft Windows users from the ‘Tools’ menu please select ‘Account Settings’.

Step 3 – At the very bottom of the window pane on the left hand side please select ‘Outgoing Server (SMTP)’. Please do not confuse this with the mention of ‘Outgoing Server’ elsewhere, which also will be listed in the right hand area for individual email accounts. You definitely need to select the option ‘Outgoing Server (SMTP)’ from the ‘left hand area’ as shown below.

Step 4 – Once you have selected ‘Outgoing Server (SMTP)’ from the left area new options will appear in the right as shown below. Now you need to select the SMTP server you are updating in the right-hand window pane, and select ‘Edit…’.

Step 5 – Now update your SMTP with the new settings. i.e. perhaps changing the ‘server name’. Once finished select ‘OK’, followed by a second ‘OK’.
