Windows 10 Update KB4038782 Failed to Install

This blog post is about how I managed to install the Microsoft Windows 10 update KB4038782 after it initially failed to install.

Background
I’ve got a bunch of computers running Windows 10, but one computer failed to install the update. I tried a few times, but then luckily was able to resolve the problem using the steps below.

How I installed the update

1. I’m running the 64bit version of Windows 10 and downloaded the offline installer file ‘2017-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB4038782)’ from here: https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4038782
2. Then I rebooted the computer and logged in as an administrator account.
3. I then ran the offline installer that I had downloaded (as mentioned in step 1).
4. Once the installer had completed, I selected ‘Restart Now’.

Notes
The offline installer file is massive and is over 1GB in size! I can’t remember how long it took to install, but it was quite a while and I’m glad I had the available time.

Whilst it was time consuming to deal with this problem, I’m glad the solution was simple.
